Haryana Transport Minister Anil Vij inspected the rising water levels of the Tangri River in Ambala Cantonment this morning and directed the district administration to issue announcements for the evacuation of residents living in vulnerable areas to safer locations.
The Tangri River crossed the danger mark this morning, with an inflow of 30,000 cusecs, posing a significant threat to residents in low-lying areas. Minister Vij inspected the affected sites and instructed the district administration to take all necessary precautionary measures.

Interacting with the media, Vij explained that heavy rainfall in the mountains had caused the river to swell. He said that more than 30,000 cusecs of water had entered the Tangri today, well above the normal level. He added that although deepening of the riverbed had begun before the monsoon season, only 25 percent of the work could be completed due to certain challenges. The remaining work will resume after the rains.
The Minister expressed hope that the high inflow would pass safely through Ambala Cantonment but emphasized that the administration remains on high alert.
He informed that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed in Ambala Cantonment, and boats have been arranged to tackle any emergencies. He appealed to people living along the Tangri River and within its catchment area to evacuate with their essential belongings.
It may be recalled that in previous monsoon seasons as well, the Tangri River had overflowed multiple times, though the water eventually receded safely. This year, excavation and deepening work undertaken on the riverbed under Minister Vij’s guidance has helped improve the water flow.
During his inspection, Vij instructed the Irrigation Department, Police, Municipal Council, and other concerned agencies to work in close coordination. He stressed that residents near the river must be informed and advised to move to safer locations through public announcements.
He also reviewed updates from Irrigation Department officials on the current water level and future inflow projections. Standing on the Tangri River bridge on Jagadhari Road, he personally observed the water flow before issuing instructions to the Ambala Cantt SDM and officials of Police, Irrigation, and other departments to ensure effective management and public safety.
